Botox vs. Dysport: What’s the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

If you’re considering wrinkle relaxers, you’ve likely heard of Botox and Dysport. Both are popular, FDA-approved treatments designed to soften dynamic wrinkles and create a smoother, more refreshed appearance, but they aren’t exactly the same.

What Are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are injectable neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A. They work by temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles that cause expression lines, such as:

  • Forehead lines

  • Frown lines (“11s” between the brows)

  • Crow’s feet

By reducing muscle activity, the overlying skin appears smoother while still allowing for natural facial expression when expertly administered.

How Are They Similar?

Both Botox and Dysport:

  • Are FDA-approved and clinically studied

  • Treat dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive movement

  • Provide temporary results (typically 3–4 months for most patients)

  • Are minimally invasive with little to no downtime

  • Can be used preventatively to slow wrinkle formation

In experienced hands, both products can deliver beautifully natural, subtle results.

What Are the Differences?

While they function similarly, there are a few key distinctions:

1. Onset Time

  • Dysport may start working slightly faster (sometimes within 2–3 days).

  • Botox typically takes about 3–5 days to begin showing results.

Full results for both are generally seen around 10–14 days.

2. Diffusion (Spread)

  • Dysport tends to spread a bit more once injected. This can make it a great option for larger areas like the forehead.

  • Botox has a slightly more contained spread, which can be helpful for precise, smaller treatment areas.

3. Personal Response

Some patients feel one lasts slightly longer for them or prefer how one “feels” compared to the other. Individual metabolism, muscle strength, and treatment goals all play a role.

Which One Is Right for You?

The best choice depends on:

  • Your facial anatomy

  • Muscle strength and movement patterns

  • Treatment area

  • Desired outcome (ultra-subtle vs. stronger softening)

  • Previous experience with neuromodulators

For many patients, both are excellent options and sometimes we may recommend one over the other based on your specific goals.

The Bottom Line

Botox and Dysport are both safe, effective wrinkle relaxers that can deliver natural-looking rejuvenation when tailored to you. The key isn’t just the product, it’s the injector’s expertise and understanding of facial anatomy.
